Not a disease, but an important physiological consideration in lean, low-body-fat breeds — primarily sighthounds like Greyhounds, Whippets, Italian Greyhounds, and Salukis — who process certain anesthetic drugs differently than other dogs, leading to prolonged sedation or slower recovery.

Symptoms

  • Unusually prolonged recovery time after sedation or anesthesia
  • Extended grogginess, weakness, or difficulty standing after a procedure
  • Increased risk of hypothermia during and after anesthesia
  • Delayed post-operative bleeding in some cases (a related but separate concern in Greyhounds)

Causes

  • Very low body fat percentage, meaning fewer fat stores available to absorb and gradually release fat-soluble anesthetic drugs
  • A genetic deficiency in the liver enzyme (cytochrome P450) responsible for metabolizing certain anesthetics, most documented in Greyhounds
  • High surface-area-to-body-fat ratio, increasing susceptibility to dropping body temperature under anesthesia
  • Lean muscle mass and body conformation that affect how drugs distribute through the body

Treatments

  • Not “treated” directly, but managed through tailored anesthesia protocols
  • Avoiding certain drugs (such as thiopental) known to cause dangerously prolonged recovery
  • Using safer alternatives like propofol, isoflurane, or ketamine/diazepam combinations, often at adjusted doses
  • Active warming (heated blankets, warmed IV fluids) during and after procedures to prevent hypothermia
  • Close post-anesthesia monitoring and informing the vet ahead of time that the dog is a sighthound or lean breed
