Scottie Cramp in Dogs and Cats

Hereditary non-inflammatory Scotty cramp

An inherited neuromuscular disorder unique to Scottish Terriers (and very rarely, Cesky Terriers), causing temporary episodes of muscle hypertonicity and loss of coordination triggered by exercise or excitement. Despite the name, it isn’t a true cramp or a painful condition — it’s a disruption in nerve signaling.

Symptoms:

  • A stiff, high-stepping “goose-stepping” gait
  • An arched spine during episodes
  • Loss of coordination or stumbling, sometimes causing the dog to somersault while running
  • In severe episodes, temporary inability to move or curling into a ball
  • Episodes typically last a few minutes up to 30 minutes and resolve on their own
  • No pain is associated with the episodes despite the name

Causes

  • Believed to be caused by a disorder in serotonin metabolism within the central nervous system
  • Inherited as an autosomal recessive trait, meaning both parents must carry the gene
  • Episodes are triggered by exercise, excitement, or stress
  • Usually first becomes apparent in puppies around 6 to 8 weeks of age

Treatments

  • No cure or specific treatment currently available
  • Management focuses on avoiding known triggers: minimizing excitement, stress, and overexertion
  • Medications such as diazepam or serotonin-related drugs may help reduce frequency and severity in more affected dogs
  • Prognosis is generally good for mild cases; older, adult dogs often learn to self-limit activity as symptoms begin
