Cushing’s Disease in Dogs and Cats

Hyperadenocorticism

This is when there is an overproduction of Cortisol within the dog’s body. Cortisol helps the body respond to stress, fight infections and control weight.   
There are 3 types of Cushing’s Disease:
  1. Pituitary-Dependent Cushing’s Disease
  2. Adrenal Gland Tumor
  3. Iatrogenic Cushing’s Disease

 

                      

Symptoms

  • Hair loss
  • Restlessness
  • Increased thirst and urination
  • Abdominal weight gain.

Causes

Most cases are caused by a benign tumour on the pituitary gland. Can also be caused by a tumour on the adrenal gland.

Treatments

Vet may prescribe ongoing medication and may have to monitor the dog frequently.
