Sleek, vocal, and utterly self-assured, the Siamese is one of the most recognisable and beloved cat breeds on the planet — and one of the oldest, too. Its story begins in old Siam (modern-day Thailand), where these striking pointed cats were treasured members of royal and temple households, referred to in ancient manuscripts as “Wichien-maat,” meaning “moon diamond.” Legend holds they were prized enough to serve as palace guardians, said to pounce on anyone who dared approach a member of the royal family with bad intentions. The breed made its Western debut in 1884, when a diplomat named Edward Blencowe Gould brought a breeding pair home to England for his sister, and it was officially recognised in 1906 — making it one of the very first pedigreed cat breeds in the world. From there, the Siamese only grew more famous, becoming a global sensation by the mid-20th century thanks to its exotic look and larger-than-life personality. And what a personality it is: Siamese cats are famously intelligent, deeply bonded to their people, and anything but quiet about it — they communicate constantly through a rich range of vocalisations and have earned a reputation as one of the most “dog-like” of all cat breeds for their loyalty and trainability. They crave closeness, often following their favourite person from room to room, and do best in homes ready to give them plenty of interaction, play, and mental stimulation. Left alone too often, a bored Siamese will happily let you know about it — loudly.
