Elbow Dysplasia in Dogs and Cats

This condition involves multiple developmental abnormalities of the elbow joint, such as abnormal growth of cells, tissue, or bone. If the bones comprising of the elbow joint do not fit perfectly due to growth abnormalities, this can lead to malformation and degeneration of the elbow joint.

Symptoms

  • Forelimb lameness
  • Pain when extending elbow
  • Elbow has short range of motion

Causes

It is hereditary. Other contributing factors may be growth rate, trauma, poor nutrition and rapid weight gain.

Treatments

Surgery is recommended.
