Kneecap Dislocation in Dogs and Cats

Luxating Patella

This occurs when the dog’s kneecap is dislocated from its normal position in the groove of the thigh bone. When the kneecap is dislocated it can only be returned to its normal position once the quadriceps muscles in the hind legs relax and lengthen.         

Symptoms

  • Bow legged
  • Limping
  • Hindlimb lameness

Causes

Genetic malformation or trauma.

Treatments

Depending on the severity, surgery may be recommended.
