Obesity in Dogs and Cats

This is when there is an excess amount of body fat. This occurs when the energy intake exceeds the energy expenditure. Obesity can result in a serious health issues that could shorten your dog’s life span.

Symptoms

  • Weight gain
  • Excess body fat
  • Lack of mobility
  • Difficulty breathing

Causes

Over eating and lack of exercise are the most common. Can also be caused by neutering, Insulinoma, Hypothyroidism and Hyperadrenocorticism, which all contribute to weight gain.

Treatments

A diet plan with high levels of protein and fiber, and low levels of fat, will help manage the dog’s weight. Regular exercise is also recommended to help maintain a healthy weight.
